Happy St.Patrick’s Day and a few roots

Wishing you all a very Happy St.Patrick’s Day! Hope you will enjoy this fun day of the wearing o’ the green. We have the potatoes, cabbage and carrots  cooking, but we won’t be having corned beef. Our choice is kielbasa. It goes will with the other ingredients and adds a little of hubby’s Greek and Polish roots along with my Irish roots. Boy that sure is a combination.  We also will not be having Irish Soda Bread, I have never cared for that. Maybe just some good old fashioned home made bread, now that sounds good. I have been trying to stay away from bread, but once in a while you gotta do what you gotta do.

This is my Grampa Fagan. my brother Tom and I when I was younger. Grampa Fagan lived to a wonderful age of 96 and we had a great relationship. I had the privilege of caring for him in his elder years. I learned so much wisdom from him just listening to stories.

Gramp was born in 1896, and was retired form the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard before I was born. As long as I knew him, he was old and was full of “piss ‘an vinegar”, as was one of his favorite sayings. He truly was “all Irish”. Every meal needed to have potatoes and fried onions, and he was a happy man.

As I looked up the family name and crest, I came across this little tidbit of info~

The two best known Fagans in the past were Robert Fagan (1745-1816), born in Cork, who was a diplomat and portrait painter; and James Fleming Fagan (1828-1893), American planter, soldier and public official of Irish descent.

Grampa’s family was form Cork. Maybe that is where I get my artistic flair from.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Blessings for a wonderful weekend.

  1. Sara, my maternal grandfather was from the Cork area also. He was from Skibereen on Dunmanus Bay. I've been lucky enough to visit his home in Ireland . My maternal grandmother was from Northern Ireland, Keady in the county of Armagh.
    Proud to be Irish.
Wishing you a very Happy St. Patrick's Day.
